LOCAL AREA

Waterrow is ideally located for days out and within half an hours drive there are many places to see and do.

Our nearest town, Wiveliscombe (known locally as Wivey) is approximately three miles away where there are an assortment of good shops for both local food and gifts along with two public houses and cafes/restaurants.

Bampton is 7 miles away just over the Devon border and again has good local shops, pubs and cafes. The centre of Bampton is a conservation area and they have their own Charter Fair in October. Other towns worth a visit are Taunton (County town for Somerset), Wellington, Tiverton, Dunster, Dulverton and Minehead.

Exmoor National Park – Within half an hour’s drive of Waterrow you can reach Dulverton, the gateway to Exmoor National Park opening up 265 square miles of unspoilt heathland, valleys and woodland. Popular places to visit are Tarr Steps, Dunkery Beacon, Lynton and Lynmouth and the Doone Valley.

PUBS & RESTAURANTS

WALKING AND CYCLING

There are several pubs and restaurants, from walking distance and well into the local area.

Our first recommendation will always be the Rock Inn which is down the road (500 metres walk). The Rock Inn is 450 year old Gastro pub, serving excellent food and in 2018 was awarded a Star for Outstanding Food for the third year running.

Our local town of Wiveliscombe (3 miles away) hosts two typical country pubs - Bear Inn and White Hart. Both of these will offer our guests concessions when dining.

Not too far away in Bampton is the multi award winning Swan Inn, serving an assortment of beers and larger along with lovely food. In 2018 the Swan won Gold Award for the South West Tourism Awards - Tourist Pub of the Year.

There are many other local pubs and eateries nearly, all information available upon request or in our Information Centre.

COUNTRY HOMES & GARDENS

If you enjoy walking there are many lovely walks around Waterrow and we are on the route of the West Deane Way. We do sell a walking book that provides 9 circular walks from the caravan park, ranging from half an hour to all day. If you would like to bring your bikes, you need to be quite fit as this is a hilly area! Exmoor is beautiful walking country and you can also walk round Clatworthy Reservoir (no dogs allowed) or Wimbleball Lake. The Somerset Levels are approximately 30 minutes drive, wonderful for walking, cycling and bird watching.

FISHING

You can fish in the River Tone on the Park, but you need to be quite good! You can also fly fish at Exebridge, Clatworthy Reservoir or Wimbleball Lake.

There are also coarse fishing venues close by in Waterrow and at Shillingford, Oakford and Langford Lakes – all within ten minutes drive.

If you are lover of gardens, National Trust properties and country homes you will enjoy visiting some of the following places :-

Knightshayes Court, Hestercombe Gardens, Arlington Court, Killerton House, Dunster Castle , Cothay Manor and Gardens, East Lambrook Manor and Tintinhull. There are many open gardens and specialist nurseries in Somerset, check them out on the internet or browse through the Yellow Garden Book.
